Our goal
at MakeScentofWine.com is to provide wine aficionados, as well
as, neophytes with the highest quality product to help increase or
simply discover the enjoyment of wine; an enjoyment that is entirely
linked to our sense of smell. This product is Le Nez du Vin.
As famed wine author Dewey Markham Jr. explains very eloquently: "We
have forgotten how to recognize smells. To varying degrees most of
us have acquired the habit of closing off our sense of smell. It's
a matter of self-defense, really. We are surrounded with smells continually;
if we gave due attention to every one that came our way in the course
of the day we would find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of sensory
information we'd have to process. So we get into the habit of not
concentrating, and it is usually when someone specifically brings
it to our attention ("do you smell something burning?") that we focus
on our sense of smell at all. Consequently, we end up forgetting what
things smell like, and when we come across a smell that is detached
from its traditional source, we may find that it is almost impossible
to identify. To a lot of people the smell of an apple may be familiar
but frustratingly unrecognizable until they see the apple and can
anchor the smell to a visual reference. This is what happens when
we are presented with a glass of wine. When we raise it to the nose
we know that there is a smell, but what is it? The only visual cue
we have is a red or white liquid, which is not at all that suggestive
of what we are trying to identify. Unfortunately we can't just say,
"Oh, it smells like wine" and be done with it. There is something
there that we have smelled before and until we can identify it it's
like an itch that can't be scratched".
As wine
drinkers this was exactly the problem we were faced with, something
that made us unable to discuss wine with common terms due to our inability
to put a name on what we smelled. Our line of products allows the
wine drinker to put a name on what he smells. Our kits provide a venue
where all the scents are at an arms length making it easy for one
to reopen one's sense of smell in the comfort of one's home.
In the
past to achieve such an understanding one had to either be an expert
working in a winery, a wine store or a true passionate capable of
spending hours at the florist to smell the flowers or go to the produce
department of the neighborhood supermarket to smell the fruits. Le
Nez du Vin is simply about empowering anyone who wishes to understand
wine better to achieve the goal of taking more pleasure in drinking
wine.
